Philip March

Inducted 2024

Philip March has entertained the speedway public for over 44 years and is one of only three people to have won both the Australian Speedcar and Sprintcar Championships.

Phil’s driving talent was evident early, winning the first of four South Australian Speedcar titles in 1980-81 in his debut season before claiming the National crown in 1985-86.

Phil then campaigned in Sprintcars and many South Australian fans will fondly remember his win at Speedway Park’s first ever round of what would become World Series Sprintcars in 1987, with Phil going on to become one of the longest contracting drivers in the series history, signing on for 13 seasons and amassing six wins, nineteen podiums and five quick-times.

Perhaps his most famous victory however was the 1999-2000 Australian Sprintcar Championship at Warrnambool, where he beat Kerry Madsen by the narrowest of margins on a rain delayed Sunday afternoon.

Phil is a true innovator in Australian speedway racing with some labelling his early Speedcars as ahead of their time. He was engaged by Goodyear for tyre testing, Formula 1 engineers with shock absorber technology, engine development with Maxwill Motors and he even supplied the real car data to Ratbag Games for the iconic “World of Outlaws” simulation game released in 2002.

Phil has been awarded South Australian Sprintcar Club Life Membership, Sporting Car Club of SA Competitor of the Year, and the SA Speedcar Title named in his honour, and tonight, we welcome him into the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame.
