The first West Australian to win an Australian title in any car division, John was the 1974, 1975 and 1977 Australian Formula 500 Champion, placed second in the Australian title three times and third five times. He was also a six times West Australian state champion from 1968 to 1980.
John won a grand total of 67 feature races at the Claremont Speedway from 1958 to 1994, more than double the next best of 31. He was still competitive late in his career, winning the Perth Motorplex Formula 500 track championship at the age of 63 in 2003.
